Christmas Games to Play this Year!

It’s only a few days til christmas, so why not play these classics for some festive-fun this holiday season!

Holiday Lemmings

Lemmings was arguably one of the most popular games of its era, with its puzzles captivating adults and children alike. So it was the perfect Christmas treat when Christmas Lemmings (also known as Holiday Lemmings) was released.

Christmas Lemmings was released as a series of short games between 1991 and 1994. The first, 1991, included two four-level demos. From there, an additional two full length games were released.

James Pond 2: Robocod

Following the story of James Pond shortly after the first game, you are thrown into the action after discovering that the protagonist’s arch nemesis – Dr Maybe – has infiltrated Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole. Pond must free Santa’s helpers (portrayed as either Penguins or Elves) and defeat Dr Maybe…

One interesting fact about this game is that the original UK release, Santa’s helpers were Penguins due to product placement for Penguin chocolate bars.

The game was released on various consoles including the Sega Mega Drive to in more recent times being added to the PlayStation network.

Christmas Film Adaptions

Batman Returns

There are seven variations of this Christmas Classic – even though it was an adaption of the film of the same name. This is because it was released on the NES, SNES, Sega’s 8-bit consoles, Sega’s 16 bit consoles, Atari Lynx, DOS and Amiga. Majorly, all of the alternate games play just like the film, following the same plot and scenes in some.

The Grinch

The beloved book and later film was adapted into a video game. Released on the PlayStation, Game Boy Colour, Dreamcast and Windows – the platform game showed mixed reviews upon release. It follows the narrative of film, with the player controlling the Grinch in his efforts to steal Christmas.

Gremlins: Stripe vs Gizmo

Gremlins: Stripe vs Gizmo is the perfect game to play on your Game Boy this Christmas. There are two narratives available to play in the game: Gizmo and Stripe. When playing as Gizmo, enemies are portrayed as Gremlins and when playing as Stripe they are Mogwai. The boss fights at the end of the games are the opposite main character.

When playing as Gizmo, the player must save Christmas from the wrath of Stripe who has stolen the townsfolk presents. Whereas, Stripe has devised a plan to destroy Gizmo and the Mogwai.

Elf the Movie

Elf was a massive Christmas blockbuster upon release – even being adapted into a 10-mission Game Boy Advance game. The game follows the same story as the film, with the protagonist being Buddy the elf – or a human brought up by the Elf’s at the North Pole. The player guides Buddy back into Manhattan to find his real father.
